Sportsbooks don't want you to win,we started Locktopus to change that.
Locktopus
/lɑk·tə·pəs/
noun
A bet where a sportsbook forgets how to do math, and you're there to notice.
Origin
The exact origin is debated, but most scholars point to Rome in AD 79 when Emperor Titus was asked about the odds of Vesuvius erupting. He reportedly replied “that's a Locktopus” seconds before the eruption, followed by tons of high fives.
The Locktopus Story
We saw the inside.
Locktopus was started by two college friends from MIT who worked for one of the biggest US sportsbooks — what seemed like a dream job. The experience was eye-opening. The entire system is designed to do one thing: keep losing bettors betting and shut out anyone who wins. Limits slashed. Accounts banned. Meanwhile losing bettors get VIP treatment and every incentive to keep depositing and betting. The “responsible gambling” messaging is the biggest joke out there. It is completely predatory.
We started betting with math.
We left and started betting ourselves. Tracked mispriced lines across every book, calculated true probabilities, and sized our bets with Kelly Criterion. It worked well enough to support ourselves — until the books caught on. Limits slashed to cents. Promos pulled. So we started placing bets through friends, texting them what to bet and when. That's when it clicked: why not show everyone how to beat the sportsbooks?
We built what we wished existed.
Every tool we tried was either built for quants or cost $200/month. Cluttered dashboards, overwhelming filters, a hundred columns of data fighting for your attention. We wanted something clean, simple, and affordable. So we built it.
